A childhood shaped by nature

Born in Rochdale, Lancashire, on July 7, 1941, Bill was raised in Birmingham after his family relocated there.

He developed a passion for birdwatching as a young boy, a hobby that would eventually become just as important to his career as comedy.

His love of wildlife stayed with him throughout his life and inspired countless TV programmes and books.
