The movie star claimed that she was "deathly afraid of flying" after surviving a plane crash in Wyoming back in 2000 and felt that starring in the 2013 movie Gravity – in which she played an astronaut trapped in space – would help her tackle the phobia.

She told The New York Times newspaper: "I convinced myself it was the universe telling me I needed to get over my fear. I said I would do it.

"I wasn't happy about it. But I said I would do it."
