A box office flop

It’s difficult to imagine today, but It’s a Wonderful Life was a box office disappointment on its initial release. The film reportedly lost Frank Capra’s production company, Liberty Films, around $525,000. Its fortunes changed years later when it was repeatedly broadcast on television without licensing or royalty fees — helping it find a new audience and cement its status as a Christmas classic.
