Midsommar (2019)

Ari Aster’s second feature trades darkness for daylight terror. Florence Pugh stars as Dani, whose trip to a Swedish midsummer festival turns into a hallucinatory nightmare of ritual and sacrifice. Aster called it “a breakup movie wearing the skin of a horror film".

With its pastel colours, folklore rituals and emotional intensity, Midsommar cemented Aster as a master of modern unease.
