Scarlett Johansson’s 2008 album Anywhere I Lay My Head, a collection of Tom Waits covers, was savaged by critics. The Guardian dismissed it as “blankly androgynous", while the Los Angeles Times stated the album “feels more like a celebrity vanity project than a bold musical statement".

The record sold fewer than 25,000 copies in the US and Johansson quietly stepped away from music.
