Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

Garfield received an Oscar nomination for his role as real-life World War II medic Desmond Doss, who saved 75 men without firing a gun.

Directed by Mel Gibson, the picture is both harrowing and uplifting in equal measure.

Gibson praised the actor and said: “Andrew has a purity and gentleness to him that made Desmond believable.”
