Julianne Moore as Clarice Starling in Hannibal
Jodie Foster won an Oscar as Clarice Starling in 1991's The Silence of the Lambs, though didn’t return for the 2001 sequel Hannibal.
Instead, Julianne Moore was brought on to star alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins in the horror/crime flick.
Foster later clarified she had chosen not to come back for Hannibal as she wanted to focus on her directorial debut feature Flora Plum, which was ultimately cancelled.
She explained: “The official reason I didn't do Hannibal is I was doing another movie, Flora Plum ... Clarice meant so much to [director] Jonathan [Demme] and me, she really did, and I know it sounds kind of strange to say, but there was no way that either of us could really trample on her.”
Moore later described stepping in for Foster as “an honour and a burden,” aiming to continue on from where Foster had left off, while also making the character her own.
