The famous scene caused problems

Production came to halt when cinematographer Donald McAlpine faced an issue with the scene where Romeo and Juliet first see each other through the fish tank.

The reflections of the water and the glass of the tank made it impossible to light without causing unwanted reflections.

Instead, McAlpine inserted some fluorescent tubes in the tank to create the only source of light in the scene.
