Red Sonja (1985)
The Richard Fleischer-helmed picture starred Brigitte Nielsen as the title character – a woman who seeks revenge after receiving a divine gift having been left for dead by soldiers.
Red Sonja, which is based on Robert E. Howard's short story Red Sonya of Rogatino, featured Arnold Schwarzenegger in the supporting role of Lord Kalidor.
A reboot was released last year that featured Italian actress Matilda Lutz in the lead role.
Warcraft (2016)
The picture is based on Blizzard Entertainment's video game series of the same name and was directed by Duncan Jones, son of the late music icon David Bowie.
Warcraft – which featured a cast including Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster and Dominic Cooper – became the highest-grossing film based on a video game (although it has since been surpassed by 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie) but was received negatively by critics.
Conan the Barbarian (1982)
The epic picture is based on Robert E. Howard's hero and tells the story of the titular barbarian (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his quest to avenge his parents' death at the hands of snake cult leader Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones).
The film was beset by problems during production but proved to be a commercial hit and helped Arnie become a global star.
Willow (1988)
Ron Howard's movie starred Warwick Davis as aspiring magician Willow Ufgood, who joins forces with mercenary Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) to protect baby princess Elora Danan from the evil Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh).
Executive produced by George Lucas, the film performed strongly at the box office and earned Oscar nominations for Sound Effects Editing and Visual Effects.
Highlander (1986)
The flick starred Sean Connery, Christopher Lambert and Clancy Brown as immortal beings who hunt down one another to collect more power.
Russell Mulcahy's movie - notable for its 'There can only be one' catchphrase and Queen soundtrack - ended up spawning four sequels and three spin-off TV series.
A reboot, helmed by John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski, is in the pipeline with Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe and Dave Bautista all set to appear.
