From Prince to Pauper: 5 Things That Led to Prince Andrew’s Fall From Grace
Once dubbed “the party prince” of Buckingham Palace, Prince Andrew’s public image has crumbled under scandal, controversy and a royal reckoning. From jet-setting excess to ties with convicted sex offenders, the Duke of York’s reputation — and royal role — have been left in tatters.
Here are five key moments that transformed Andrew Mountbatten Windsor from Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite son into the monarchy’s biggest liability.
1. The Jeffrey Epstein Connection
Prince Andrew’s friendship with convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was the catalyst for his downfall.
After Epstein’s 2019 death as he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges, photos of Andrew staying at his New York mansion surfaced, sparking outrage. He called it “a mistake and an error,” yet his lack of remorse only fuelled public fury.
2. The BBC ‘Car-Crash’ Interview
In November 2019, Andrew appeared on the BBC's Newsnight programme to “clear his name” — but instead torpedoed it.
In a calamitous interview, Andrew claimed he couldn’t sweat due to an "adrenaline overdose" while fighting in the Falklands War and denied ever meeting Virginia Giuffre – who had accused Andrew of sexually assaulting her when she was just 17 years old.
Andrew's bizarre answers turned him into a global punchline and palace insiders later called it “the most disastrous interview in royal history.”
3. Losing His Royal Titles and Patronages
Following the public outcry, the late Queen Elizabeth II stripped her son of his military titles and royal patronages in January 2022.
The palace confirmed he would no longer use “His Royal Highness” in any official capacity. Once a senior royal, Andrew became a shadow of his former self — exiled from the very institution he once embodied.
4. The Virginia Giuffre Lawsuit
In 2021, Virginia Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit in the U.S., alleging Andrew had sexually assaulted her when she was 17 — claims he has consistently denied.
In February 2022, he agreed to a reported £12 million settlement to avoid a trial, citing his desire to spare the Queen further embarrassment. Though he avoided court and continues to deny the allegations, the damage to Andrew's reputation was irreversible.
5. Life After the Scandal
The final humiliation for Andrew came as he was stripped of his 'prince' title as he faced fresh scrutiny over his links to Epstein following the publication of a posthumous memoir by Giuffre – who took her own life in April.
In addition to loss of his title, Andrew is also set to leave his Royal Lodge property in Windsor.
The decision comes after Andrew relinquished his other royal titles, including the Duke of York, earlier this month due to the continued furore about his private life.
