The 39-year-old actress - who shares a five-year-old son and three-year-old daughter with her spouse - explained they’ve been using something called The Fair Play Deck to split responsibilities at home.
She told People: “We’re trying it out, and right now, [Sam’s] got middle of the night care. My son was up four times last night, and he got up every time to make sure he had what he needed.
“He’s just very, very kind.”
Emmy added that Sam, who she married in 2017, is “amazing with both of our kids”.
She added: “He is so involved. It’s interesting to watch somebody who’s so incredibly capable and can be a writer and a director and a producer and can manage a set of hundreds of people, and who can also be such a good human being.
“I feel really, really lucky.”
Unlike her own life as a mother, Emmy’s childhood was vastly different. She was raised by her single mother Cheryl, and only met her father for the first time when she was four. She met him once more aged eight, and then not again until she was an adult in her twenties.
She mused: “There are so many people who have grown up with one parent because one parent wasn’t interested in loving them.
“That is a story that is mine and many people’s. I’m lucky that I’ve been able to feel the love of my mom deeply, but that piece of my life I don’t think will ever feel solved, and yet I don’t think that it has the same charge for me anymore.
“Being an adult, you realise that people are really just doing their best, even if they disappoint you. It’s normal for a kid to want the love of their parent, and to not get it is very painful.”
Emmy concluded: “Watching my husband with my kids, especially my daughter, is amazing. I get to watch her get something that I didn’t have, and in a way that’s enough for now.”
