Shania Twain reveals how she refused to let her ex-husband's affair destroy her faith in love
Shania Twain was left heartbroken when she discovered her husband of 14 years, Robert "Mutt" Lange, had cheated on her with her close pal-and-former personal assistant Marie-Anne Thiebaud in 2008.
Shania Twain refused to let her ex-husband's affair destroy her belief in finding the love of her life.
The 60-year-old singing icon was left heartbroken in 2008 after her 14-year marriage to 77-year-old record producer Robert "Mutt" Lange collapsed after she discovered his shock betrayal with her close pal-and-former personal assistant, Marie-Anne Thiebaud.
Amid the ordeal, Shania learned to be vulnerable when it comes to pursuing romances, and realized that love can arrive when least expected.
And that proved true when the Man I Feel Like a Woman hitmaker married Marie-Anne's former spouse, 55-year-old businessman Frederic Thiebaud, in 2011, after the pair grew close while healing from the heartbreak caused by their exes' infidelity.
Shania told The Sun newspaper: "I think love is a scary thing and it’s all about risk, as you just don’t know where it’s going to end up, do you?
"You have to enter it as a risk-taker, so if you’re not in the spirit or the mood of taking chances, then maybe it’s not the right time in your life to fall in love or to get involved.
"But sometimes love is such a strong attraction you just can’t help yourself.
"So I think that is the moment where you have to just let go and throw in the towel to any reluctance or self-protection. You just have to be vulnerable."
The five-time Grammy winner credits "time" for getting love right later in life.
Shania added: "I’d love to have been able to get it right in my 50s, but that wasn’t enough time. I needed to be in my 60s to start getting it right, you know? And that’s fine. I plan to live to be 200 anyway."
The artist reflects on the emotional scars left by her past relationship heartbreaks, and the fear of being "burned" by love again on the track, Scary Thing, which features on Shania's new album, Little Miss Twain.
She sings: "I don’t want to go there, the ashes are still warm from the last time I got burned. I don’t want to feel this scary little thing called love."
While on Problematic, also on the new album, she discusses the fear and vulnerability that can come with giving someone your heart.
Shania sings: "I haven’t slept a wink without you. I know they say I’ve lost my way. Here’s my heart, just go ahead and stab it."
Ultimately, the I'm Gonna Getcha Good performer is using Little Miss Twain as a diary-like reflection of her journey from childhood to becoming a global star.
She explained: "It is like a diary. It’s a reflection of a full period of my life from where I started on stage as Little Miss Twain as a child, all the way up to when I got my record deal in my late-20s.
"It’s a phase of my life that a lot of people don’t know much about, so I am reflecting on where I was at the time, who I was around at the time, and just the basic atmosphere. It is very diary-esque."
