Jennifer Garner found close friends via social media
Jennifer Garner has admitted some of the most important friendships in her life stemmed from connections she made on social media.
Jennifer Garner made some of her closest friendships on social media.
The 54-year-old actress - who has three children with ex-husband Ben Affleck - has become "very close" to people she has followed online and even found herself confiding in them via direct message about subjects she wasn't openly discussing with the people in her life.
Discussing her Five Star Weekend character, food influencer Hollis Shaw, Jennifer told Entertainment Weekly: "I do it very differently than Hollis does. I don’t show my kids.
"I admire Hollis’ openness with her followers. They do become friends and family in a way that she has invited one of them to her five-star weekend. Gemma [Chan]'s character is not someone she had ever met in person.
"And I will say that I have become very close with people that I’ve followed, and I’ve formed friendships that started out as DMs or comments or fandom on my part.
"I really didn’t know Isabella Boyleston or James Whiteside, the principal dancers for American Ballet Theater. I didn’t really know Tiler Peck. I didn’t know my dancer friends before social media — which is hard to believe, because now I feel really close to them. I didn’t know [Broadway star] Jessica Vosk.
"It’s funny, a lot like Hollis is with Gemma’s character, there are people on social media that I have told things to that I wasn’t — in the moment — telling people outside of my normal life, that I was holding very privately."
The Alias actress believes it is important for her to play characters who are her own age, rather than younger women, because representation is vital.
She said: "Well, [at 54 years old,] I am in that time. They’ll want to put me in something and say [the character is in her] 40s. And I say, 'No, make her my age.'
"I don’t want to pretend like I’m not. I want to be me.
"It matters that we have women showing up in their 50s who are still having all of these things in their lives. Because life doesn’t stop. It’s not like you just go sit on the side of the road and look at the rocks."
Jennifer admitted she thought she'd be "done" with more physical roles now but she plans to keep shooting action scenes for as long as she can.
She confessed: "I thought I would be well done by now, and just waiting to play a grandma. But I just wrapped a movie with John Cena that has action and romance and was so much fun.
"I know there’s an expiration date on that, but I’m gonna run it up to the very edge. I don’t mean there’s some expiration date on my career, but someday I won’t be able to do action."
