Jenny McCarthy was glad to see her ex-boyfriend Jim Carrey looking "really happy" during a rare public appearance in France.

The Mask star has stepped away from Hollywood in recent years but he returned to the spotlight in February to pick up a special honour at the Cesar Awards in Paris and now his former girlfriend Jenny - who dated the actor for five years before they split in 2010 - has revealed she was thrilled to see her ex-partner doing well.

She told PEOPLE: "He looked very happy at that award show. And I was happy for him. That's the first thing I noticed. I said: 'Oh wow, Jim looks really happy'.

"You know, that's the part that, sadly, people miss. We're so obsessed with how he looks that we didn't consider how happy he looked."

Jenny also gave her thoughts on the wild conspiracy theories that suggested Jim had been replaced by a clone or impersonator at the awards show, adding: "It was definitely Jim Carrey."

Jim, 64, announced he was stepping down from his long career in Hollywood in 2022 after nearly 40 years on the film scene but he came out of retirement to play Doctor Eggman in 2024 movie Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and he admitted his break gave him a "new appreciation" for acting.

Speaking last year, Jim told E! News: "I think whenever you step away from something, even if it's something you love, you get a new appreciation for it. So I do value the rest. And I also value getting out of people's faces, you know what I mean?"

The Hollywood actor was then asked about the most "awe-inspiring" moment of his career so far and admitted that he just has more "gratitude" for it now, especially around Christmas when new generations of youngsters can be introduced to his film The Grinch.

He added: "It's less about awe than it is just about ...I appreciate it. I'm gratified by it. When The Grinch comes on every year, I sit go back and I go 'Wow!'

"When the kids are old enough, they'll see that and they'll go: 'That guy's cool!'"
