Nathan Fillion makes plea to Firefly fans to help revival land 'a home'
Firefly star Nathan Fillion has announced a revival of the cult classic show, but he still needs the help of the fans.
Nathan Fillion says the Firefly revival needs fans' help to find "a home".
The 54-year-old actor - who played Captain Mal Reynolds in the cult classic space Western series and its 2005 sequel movie Serenity - has confirmed the original cast are getting back together for an animated series set between the original show and its feature film follow-up.
In an Instagram post after the announcement at AwesomeCon over the weekend, he said: "As of this moment, word is out. We are going to try to bring back Firefly. This time, we're gonna animate it."
He added that he already has the blessing of series creator Joss Wheadon - who won't be involved - to develop the show, while 20th Century Fox and Disney were happy for him to have the rights.
He added: "They got excited, they said yes!"
A script has already been finished, and Nathan has landed married writing and producing team Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters as showrunners.
He teased: "They're married, they met through Firefly."
Nathan said: "The last piece we need is a home. And for that, we need you. Like this post, comment on this post, repost this post. Tag your friends, tag your family, tag your enemies.
"I'm asking you to do what you've always done. Keep Firefly flying. Oh, and I'm about to go pitch this thing. So, wish me luck."
The animation will be handled by ShadowMachine, while Nathan's own Collision33 will produce alongside 20th Television Animation.
He'll be joined in the voice cast by original stars Alan Tudyk (Hoban Washburne), Gina Torres (Zoë Washburne), Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra), Sean Maher (Simon Tam), Summer Glau (River Tam) and Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb).
He added in the caption: "The word is out. To keep Firefly flying, we need a home. And for that, we need you.
"Like this post, comment on this post, repost this post. Tag a friend, tag an enemy, even tag a Reaver.
"Give us some ‘quantifiable analytics’ that we can use to convince folks that this is something people want.”
Firefly has maintained a strong fanbase with people loving the adventures of the renegade crew of smugglers on the transport ship Serenity, and people have constantly called for a comeback.
The show, which was set in the year 2517, was originally made up of 14 episodes, although only 11 of these aired before it was cancelled by 20th Century Fox Television.
Nathan has heaped praise on the way the fans have kept Firefly "relevant", and he wants to repay that.
He told Deadline: "The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve."
