The troubled Toxic singer, 44, was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol at about 9.30pm on Wednesday (05.03.26) in Ventura County, with reports saying she was handcuffed on suspicion of DUI and booked early on Thursday morning at about 3am before being released around 6am.
Shortly after the news of her arrest broke, a representative for the star told the Daily Mirror: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.
“Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
Referring to the two sons she shares with her ex Kevin Federline, 47 – Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19 – the representative added: “(Britney’s) boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”
Ventura County sheriff records show Britney is scheduled to appear in court on 4 May.
Britney has not publicly commented on the arrest.
On the same day, it also emerged that Britney had been granted a permanent restraining order against a man accused of harassing her.
According to TMZ, Britney recently obtained a permanent restraining order against a Louisiana man identified in reports as Donald, 51.
The outlet said Britney filed court documents alleging that Donald had been harassing her since 2013.
TMZ also reported that Donald was arrested for trespassing on her property in 2025 after allegedly arriving at her home and that he was later ordered by a court to stay 100 yards away from the singer.
The outlet added Britney’s security team contacted the sheriff’s department after discovering Donald at the property. Officers who attended the scene reportedly found the man shaking and smoking cigarettes.
Kevin previously discussed concerns about Britney’s wellbeing in his memoir.
He said: “From where I stood, she needed help. Whether that was rehab or therapy, I couldn't say for sure.”
Britney has been open about the impact of the conservatorship that governed her personal and financial affairs for more than a decade.
The arrangement, which began in 2008, placed control largely with her father Jamie Spears, before it ended in November 2021 following legal challenges and the #FreeBritney campaign.
In a social media post shared in February, Britney said: “As people, all we really want is to feel connected to each other and never feel alone... for those of you in your family that have said to help you is to isolate you and make you feel unbelievably left out... they were wrong.
“We can forgive as people but u don’t ever forget. Yearning and longing for contact is always crucial !!! I’m incredibly lucky to even be alive with how my family treated me once in my life and now I’m scared of them.”
