David Letterman has "never been more proud" of Seth Meyers.

The veteran broadcaster admitted he has enjoyed seeing his Late Night successor take on US President Donald Trump - who recently called for NBC to "immediately" fire the 51-year-old comic - but warned him "things" could "happen" if he isn't careful.

Speaking on The Barbara Gaines Show, David showed a message of support for "out good friend" Seth.

he said: "The president of the United States now wants to fire Seth Meyers. And I thought, 'This is just delightful. How do you think that's going to go?

“So anyway, I’ve never been more proud of Seth Meyers.

"That's our old show, as a matter of fact. We used to do that show, and he does a magical job. But just remember, Seth, things happen. You know what I'm saying?"

The 78-year-old star branded Trump a "dictator" and has been appalled by his administration.

He said: "[Watching the administration is] just a wonder of idiocy. It's just fantastic. It knows no bounds. And never-ending. He's our current — he's our dictator. He's not going anywhere.

"It's like 18 times the worst behaviour one has witnessed ever anywhere. Think of the worst thing that you've ever seen humans accomplish. This is so much worse. Oh, it's delightful."

Earlier this month, the former Apprentice presenter hit out at Seth, branding him a "truly deranged lunatic" after he mocked the president for his complaints about "catapults" on US Navy aircraft carriers.

Trump fumed on his Truth Social platform that Seth was: “100% ANTI TRUMP, WHICH IS PROBABLY ILLEGAL!!!(sic)"

He also ranted: "NBC's Seth Meyers is suffering from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). He was viewed last night in an uncontrollable rage, likely due to the fact that his 'show' is a Ratings DISASTER.

"Aside from everything else, Meyers has no talent, and NBC should fire him, IMMEDIATELY!(sic)"

Trump has also recently hit out at David himself after the former talk show host defended his friend Jimmy Kimmel when his programme, Jimmy Kimmel Live! was previously taken off air.

David had said at the Atlantic Festival: "You can't go around firing somebody because you're fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian and criminal administration in the Oval Office. That's just not how this works."

In response, the president posted: "Whatever happened to the very highly overrated David Letterman, whose ratings were never very good, either? He looks like hell, but at least he knew when to quit. LOSER!!!(sic)"
