Tate McRae finds comparisons to Britney Spears to be "flattering and scary".

The 21-year-old pop star is a huge fan of the chart-topping icon - but Tate thinks it's currently unfair to compare her to Britney, one of the world's best-selling artists.

Tate - who released her third studio album, 'So Close to What', earlier this month - told The Independent: "I find that flattering and scary.

"It’s such a crazy statement because no one can compare to Britney Spears. It’s like comparing someone to Michael Jackson! That’s the blueprint!"

Tate feels she experiences "constant scrutiny" as a young woman in the music business. And despite her success, Tate has still experienced some self-doubts in recent times.

She said: "Everything you do gets ripped apart and gets talked about, and it makes you question everything.

"Someone will comment on the shape of my face or the way I said a specific word, or my tone, or the way I said something in a song.

"It can be a confusing thing to battle people’s opinions and your own opinion, and it can make your perception of yourself a little cloudy sometimes."

Tate believes female stars aren't given enough credit for their own success.

The 'Sports Car' hitmaker reflected: "It’s a tale as old as time. We’ve seen this with every single iconic female artist before.

"It’s never just them who thought of the great idea or who came up with the music video, or who creatively directed the whole show."

Tate sees herself as a "very private person" - but she's much more "transparent" in her songwriting.

The singer said: "I’m a very private person. I keep my circle small. But I do feel like I keep it real in my songwriting, it feels pretty transparent."
