Keke Palmer recalls 'hating' her parents
Keke Palmer has confessed to hating her parents during her younger years.
Keke Palmer "hated [her] parents for a long time".
The 31-year-old actress first found fame as a child, starring in movies such as 'Barbershop 2: Back in Business' and 'The Wool Cap', and Keke has confessed to resenting the pressure she felt during her younger years.
She told The Cut: "I hated my parents for a long time.
"There was so much pressure to rise to the occasion for my community, for my parents, for my siblings, for their sacrifices. They weren’t saying it, but that was the reality. Because I’m the one that we all came here for."
Keke felt "people were putting limitations" on her as a younger black actress in Hollywood.
She explained: "I wasn’t necessarily in the same conversations as Victoria Justice or Selena Gomez or Miley Cyrus at that time. It was very much ‘That’s the black show’ or ‘That’s Keke Palmer, the black girl on the network.'"
Keke also recalled how she struggled to make the transition from being a child star to being taken seriously as an actress.
Keke ultimately found that she needed to reinvent herself in order to begin the next phase of her career.
She said: "You’re at this weird age where you’re too young for the kind of roles that you would want and you’re too old for the kind of roles you used to get.
"Your brand was made up of you being a kid, and you’re not a kid anymore. So you have to build a new one."
Keke was just 12 years old when she became the main breadwinner in her house, and she previously admitted that it disrupted her family's dynamic.
Speaking to the Guardian newspaper, she confessed: "It was weird for me."
