Will Ferrell considers 'Saturday Night Live' to be "the hardest but most fun job" of his career.

The 57-year-old actor starred on the long-running comedy show between 1995 and 2002, and Will now looks back on that period with a lot of fondness.

He told PEOPLE: "I had a wonderful seven seasons on that show, where I made lifelong friends.

"I knew in that moment it would be the hardest but most fun job I would ever get to do, and I still look back on it that way."

'Saturday Night Live' will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, and Will feels proud of the role he's played in the programme's success.

He said: "It's really an amazing thing that you have this live television show that still continues to put its finger on the pulse of what we're all thinking about, and it's a real credit to [creator] Lorne [Michaels] for having thought of it in the first place."

Will observed that 'Saturday Night Live' has "defined American comedy" for five decades.

He said: "It was the one thing I always dreamed about being a part of. It's kind of enormous to think about in a way, 50 years of what has really defined American comedy."

Will has been married to actress Viveca Paulin since 2000, and he recently claimed that laughter is key to a happy marriage.

The Hollywood star explained that he and his wife have a "shared sense of humor".

He told PEOPLE: "I think we were drawn to each other initially through our shared sense of humor, and that has remained the foundation of our relationship. I think, ultimately, that's our bond, making each other laugh."
