Chace Crawford "almost had a panic attack" before filming a sex scene with an octopus.

The 'Gossip Girl' star plays superhero 'The Deep' in Amazon Prime show 'The Boys' and the character was seen onscreen having sexual relations with an octopus called Ambrosius - who is voiced by Tilda Swinton - and Chase admits he was particularly nervous when the time came to disrobe and get intimate with the sea creature.

He told Rolling Stone magazine: "It’s so funny and brilliant now, but when that came up, I was like, ‘Oh God, how’s this going to work?'

"[I was] in total denial about it ... And then it got 24 hours out from the first day I had to shoot it and I almost had a panic attack."

Chase decided to talk it over with showrunner Eric Kripke and they managed to put together a plan to make the scene less worrying for the actor.

He added: "I called Eric Kripke - he’s so great. He’s got a million things going on but his door’s always open. So I was worried about the scene.

"I’m like, ‘How are we gonna do this? What are the angles gonna be? How naked do I have to be?’ He changed one shot for me. And it was great."

Chase explained he didn't get to work with an intimacy coordinator for his big moment with the octopus but it was filmed on a closed set - calling the scene "so funny and weird".

Since the scene aired, Chase has been "ragged on a little bit" by his pals but he's pleased the overall reaction to the scene was positive.

Kripke previously revealed how he went about casting Swinton as the octopus love interest, telling Variety the show's writers wanted "the classiest, Oscar-winningest, British actress we can get our hands on".

He added: "And that’s a really short list. And Dame Judi Dench was unavailable."
