David Morrissey is returning to BBC One for a third and final series of the hit sitcom Daddy Issues, alongside The White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood.

The Sherwood actor, 62, will reprise his role as hapless father Malcolm in six new episodes of the comedy, which follows his unconventional relationship with daughter Gemma, played by Aimee, 32.

The BBC has confirmed filming is already under way, with Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey, 64, and former Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati, 60, joining the cast.

The final series picks up 18 months after the events of the second season, with Malcolm and Gemma having settled into life together under the same roof.

However, their domestic arrangements will once again be disrupted by new relationships, unexpected surprises and a succession of misunderstandings.

David's character has become central to the comedy through his frequently misguided attempts to support his daughter, whose life was turned upside down when she became pregnant and found herself living with her father.

The new episodes will see Malcolm continuing to navigate his responsibilities as a parent and grandfather while dealing with changes in his own personal life.

David is best known for his extensive career in British television drama, including his role as Detective Chief Superintendent Ian St Clair in the BBC crime series Sherwood.

He also achieved international recognition for portraying the Governor, one of the principal antagonists in the American zombie drama The Walking Dead.

His other major television credits include the acclaimed BBC political thriller State of Play, the historical drama The Deal, in which he portrayed former prime minister Gordon Brown, and the crime series The Long Shadow.

David also appeared in Doctor Who, playing Jackson Lake in the Christmas special The Next Doctor, opposite David Tennant, 55.

His return to Daddy Issues will reunite him with Aimee, whose international profile has risen considerably since the sitcom first aired.

Aimee became widely recognised for portraying Aimee Gibbs in Netflix's comedy-drama Sex Education, alongside Asa Butterfield, 29, and Gillian Anderson, 58.

She subsequently starred as Chelsea in the third season of HBO's The White Lotus, which was set in Thailand and featured Walton Goggins, 54, Parker Posey, 57, and Jason Isaacs, 63.

Aimee is also due to appear alongside Angelina Jolie, 51, in the forthcoming film Anxious People, directed by Marc Forster, 56, and adapted from the bestselling novel by Fredrik Backman, 45.

The film also stars Jason Segel, 46, and follows a group of strangers caught up in a hostage situation after a bank robbery goes wrong.

Meanwhile, Neil will join Daddy Issues as Ellis, a new friend of Malcolm's.

Neil became a household name playing Tony Smart in the hugely successful 1990s sitcom Men Behaving Badly, opposite Martin Clunes, 64.

He subsequently appeared in Waterloo Road and Line of Duty, and provided the voice of Bob in the children's television programme Bob the Builder.

Shobna, best known for playing Sunita Alahan in ITV's Coronation Street and appearing in the sitcom Dinnerladies, will portray a neighbour called Odette.

Returning cast members include Sarah Hadland, 55, who played Stevie Sutton in Miranda, reprising her role as Rita.

Sharon Rooney, 37, who starred in My Mad Fat Diary and appeared in The Celebrity Traitors, will also return as Catherine.

Other new cast members include Car Share actress Sian Gibson, 50, as Rita's sister Juno, and Anthony Welsh, 43, as Avery, a video game designer who becomes Gemma's love interest.

Sophie Winkleman, 46, will play campsite owner Mary, while Liam Williams, 39, takes on the role of Rita's boyfriend.

The forthcoming series will also see changes in Gemma's professional and family life, with her daughter Sadie now attending nursery.

Gemma has secured a promotion at the salon where she works, while Malcolm has invested in a new washing machine as he attempts to improve their shared living arrangements.

The comedy, written by Danielle Ward and produced by Fudge Park, is being filmed in and around Stockport, Greater Manchester.

The BBC has not yet announced a transmission date for the third series, while the previous two seasons remain available on BBC iPlayer.
