Richard E Grant confessed to being traitor in the first episode of The Celebrity Traitors.

The 69-year-old actor and TV presenter Maya Jama were selected as two of Claudia Winkleman's three traitors - but Richard quickly shared the news with the other celebrities.

Singer James Blunt subsequently said: "It's an interesting angle."

Comedian Rob Beckett admitted to being shocked by Richard's confession.

He told Richard: "I think you've just done something that's never happened in the game - it is a bold strategy."

The actor later tried to play his confession off as a job.

But in footage for viewers of the show, he admitted: "That may be the biggest mistake I have ever made in my life. I was so thrilled to have been chosen as a traitor that in my unguarded excitement, I said, 'Of course I'm a traitor'.

"I clearly need to defuse all the heat that's coming in my direction."

Despite this, Jerry Hall refused to believe that Richard would be so unsubtle.

The model explained: "I just don't believe Richard's a traitor, I've known him 30 years and he's my neighbour.

"He says and does eccentric things, he's an amazing guy, but I think he's acting out because he's not been chosen."

Meanwhile, the final traitor will be one of James Acaster and Amol Rajan, both of whom made their own cases for the role.

Richard admitted: "Amol is the biggest Rottweiler on me; it would take the heat off me for having been such a plonker."

Of James, he said: "James Acaster is laser-eyed in his conviction that I am a traitor."

James suggested that he's Richard's best bet to remain on the show.

He told the actor: "If I go tonight, the first person they're looking at is you."

Amol, 43, made a compelling case, too.

The TV star said: "I do think I am uniquely placed to take the heat off you. I'm here because I sniff out liars for a living.

"The faithful think I will identify the traitor by doing my job really well. If I'm on your side, I'll throw them off the scent."
