'Beloved' Inbetweeners characters 'cut' from Netflix revival
The Inbetweeners co-creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley have confirmed some fan favourites won't be part of the third film.
The Inbetweeners bosses have cut "beloved" characters from the upcoming revival.
The classic sitcom's creators and writers Iain Morris and Damon Beesley have given an update on the third spinoff movie, which will stream on Netflix with a release date yet to be confirmed, and while the original four friends are returning, not everyone from the E4 show will make a comeback.
In an Instagram post, they wrote: "For the record, we’d like to clarify that, try as we might, we couldn’t squeeze every single beloved character from the TV shows into this new film."
They added that the snubs are "on us, and us alone", but stressed that any decisions came down to fitting characters into the story being told.
They added: "Again, people will speculate about why we make these choices, but sadly the truth is we just couldn’t find a plausible way in the script to bring back all our lovely ‘friends’.
"It’s not as headline worthy, but it’s the truth."
Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison are already confirmed to be returning as Will McKenzie, Simon Cooper, Jay Cartwright and Neil Sutherland.
Fans are still waiting to find out if popular characters like Charlotte Hinchliffe (Emily Atack) and headmaster Mr. Gilbert (Greg Davies) will be back.
Filming for The Inbetweeners 3 is underway, and the creators noted that while they appreciate how passionate everyone is, they would urge fans to avoid any leaks.
Alongside a shot of the four original stars standing together reading their scripts, Iain and Damon said: "We love that everyone is interested, and it’s brilliant that these four idiots are still considered news.
"We’re all excited for the film, but the rumour mill can sometimes get carried away, so our advice is simple:
"If you want to fully enjoy what we’ve got in store for you, we’d suggest avoiding photos and conjecture about the story. We promise it’ll be a more enjoyable watch going in knowing nothing."
The coming-of-age comedy series was originally broadcast on Channel 4 between 2008 and 2010, and the hugely successful show spawned two films - 2011's The Inbetweeners and The Inbetweeners 2, which dropped in 2014.
The first movie set a record for the biggest opening weekend for a UK comedy at the time of its release.
While Iain and Damon are keen to keep plot details under wraps, in 2024 they insisted the show would only return if there was a "strong enough idea" to justify a revival.
Damon told The Sun newspaper: "I often wonder where the boys would be now.
“Is Jay selling car stereos with Rio Ferdinand? Is Simon still working on Carli? Is Neil a crypto-currency millionaire? Did Will become Prime Minister for a bit?
“We’d need to be convinced there was a strong enough idea but if there’s enough interest for a new adventure, you never know.”
