Patti Smith: I'm Only Jealous Or Possessive About Men
Ahead of the September 4th release of our exclusive Patti Smith interview from 1978, this 9 minute clip gives you an uninterrupted look at what’s to come next week.
The interview was originally recorded in 1978 on tape, and owner Rick Sky met with Patti Smith in a hotel in Paris ahead of her show on March 26th of that year, before her show at The Pavillon De Paris.
The interview spans 90 minutes in total, it has never been heard in full outside of our offices and it is a rare look into Patti Smith at an incredible moment in her career. At the time, she was promoting ‘Easter’, the album was released only 23 days before this interview took place and featured tracks such as ‘Because The Night’ which have become worldwide successes that have stood the test of time to date.
In the clip linked to this article, Patti is heard talking about women in rock n roll, she appeared already to be rethinking her previous comments regarding the role of women within the genre and clarified her stance, claiming ‘If I see a cool chick in rock n roll, I’ll be her first fan’.
Aside from the broader discussion on gender and sexuality, the clip also shows Patti going into a self reflective place and considering her own perception of nationalism and what it meant to be an American in the late 1970’s.
In the full interview, with its analogue charm, Patti discusses music, the media, her personal life and her career at a fascinating moment in her history.
Throughout the discussion, the musician focuses on art and how people perceive her art, and she goes into detail about her feelings on the media and how the reaction to the media can differ in the US and Europe. She also discusses the audiences across Europe and the differences she found between them in 1978.
