Queen Camilla was "almost cast" in Only Murders in the Building.

The 79-year-old royal was close to making a guest appearance in the upcoming, London-based sixth series of the Disney+ mystery comedy-drama, but the idea never came to fruition due to strict UK union rules limiting daily filming times and other logistical challenges.

Showrunner-and-co-creator John Hoffman told Vulture: "We almost got Camilla. I know it’s insane, but yes, there was a moment."

Surprised that casting the Queen was a possibility, he added: "Then we kind of went down the road a little bit."

The idea never came to fruition because of strict UK union rules that limit daily filming times on set to 10 hours.

And the casting would have caused a number of logistical challenges that John could not afford to deal with amid a very tight production schedule.

John said: "I did pursue it a little bit, until I realised it’s going to be a whole thing."

He also joked about the possibility of signing up Meghan, Duchess of Sussex as she is linked to a possible third series of Guy Ritchie's Netflix crime series, The Gentleman, as she, her husband Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet relocate to the UK after six years in California.

John quipped: "When is she traveling? We’re leaving in three days. I wouldn’t rule anything out."

Only Murders In the Building follows three pals Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), who investigate murders in their Manhattan apartment building and create a podcast about the cases.

However, the series six synopsis teases the trio could find themselves in danger as they try to solve their "hardest case yet".

It reads: "Our beloved trio of true crime-solving podcasters must now navigate their way through the home of the cosy murder mystery, replete with a whole new collection of suspicious and particularly English-eccentric characters.

"But can they follow in the footsteps of the woman whose podcast started it all for them… without having their story end the same as hers?"

Oliver, Charles-Haden and Mabel have arrived in the UK to hunt for the killer of their rival, fellow podcaster Cinda Canning, played by Tina Fey, who is set to reprise the character for series six.

She will be joined by fellow returnee Meryl Streep (Loretta Durkin), and newbies, including David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker, Peter Capaldi, Jennifer Saunders, Jane Horrocks, Derek Jacobi, Nicola Coughlan, Richard Ayoade and Geri Halliwell.

Series six of Only Murders in the Building drops on Disney+ from December 8
