Piers Morgan declares he’d ‘cross continents’ to avoid former GMB co-star Alex Beresford
Piers Morgan has revisited his dramatic Good Morning Britain exit, joking that he would “cross continents” to avoid former colleague Alex Beresford while reflecting on the row that led to his departure from ITV.
Piers Morgan has reignited his long-running feud with former Good Morning Britain colleague Alex Beresford.
Joking he would “cross continents” to avoid the ITV weather presenter as he reflected on his dramatic departure from the breakfast programme five years ago, Piers, 51, revisited the fallout on his YouTube programme Piers Morgan Uncensored, where he looked back on the on-air confrontation that led to his exit from ITV in 2021.
The latest comments revisit one of British television’s most memorable live television moments, when Alex, 45, challenged Piers over his repeated criticism of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, 44, following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The exchange prompted Piers to storm off the Good Morning Britain set before later leaving the programme.
Since then, Piers has continued fronting Piers Morgan Uncensored, while remaining a prominent commentator on royal affairs and free speech.
The renewed remarks also come as Prince Harry, 41, has remained in the headlines over his recent UK visit and ongoing public engagements linked to the Invictus Games, with Meghan not accompanying him at public events.
Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Piers said: “You become part of a family. I see all my old – well, nearly all my old – Good Morning Britain colleagues.”
Taking aim at Alex, he added: “I don’t see the weather guy very often. I would cross continents to avoid him.
“But the others, I do still see a lot of. You do become very close, actually.”
The pair’s dispute dates back to March 2021, when Alex confronted Piers on air after the presenter questioned claims made by Meghan during her interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Alex told Piers: “I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle, you’ve made it so clear a number of times on this programme, and I understand you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off.”
He added: “She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to” – before Piers left the studio.
Piers later discussed the incident during an interview with Tucker Carlson, where he reflected on his departure and the reaction from then co-host Susanna Reid.
Asked about Susanna’s on-air apology following his walk-off, Piers said: “I was disappointed, but she might have done it in the grip of fear, that if she spoke too highly in favour of me, the same thing might happen to her. There would be a huge Twitter pile-on. By an orchestrated mob.”
During the interview, Piers also repeated his long-held criticism of Meghan and Harry, disputing the couple’s claims about media coverage surrounding their relationship and their interview with Oprah Winfrey.
He said: “Contrary to what many Americans have been led to believe, the press coverage of these two right up to the wedding was completely over-the-top euphoric. Everyone in Britain was thrilled that finally we were having a non-white bride in the royal family, it hadn’t happened.
“We were all very happy about this. I wrote about how wonderful it was on the wedding day.”
Piers continued: “This narrative from the start that she was bombarded with horrible, hateful, racist press coverage is another disingenuous load of nonsense fuelled by the Oprah Winfrey show where they flashed up a series of headlines, many of which had been deliberately cut to create a misconstrued impression, and many were actually American tabloids not British.”
He added: “I never saw that, I don’t believe that, I’m a former British tabloid editor myself and I would know if there was racist coverage in the British papers and there wasn’t.”
Piers also described Meghan, who rose to prominence in the legal drama Suits before marrying Prince Harry, as “the delusional duchess who is on the make”, criticised the couple’s commercial partnerships with Netflix and Spotify and accused them of “complete hypocrisy” over their interview with Oprah Winfrey.
He said the Oprah interview was “tacky, tasteless, disingenuous, and I’m afraid, I believe, in some cases, downright lying on a global scale”, while also urging people to resist what he described as the “woke mob”.
