Ryan Sampson is adapting Kinky Boots for television.

The Mr Bigstuff creator is the mastermind behind the new project, and he's aiming to deliver a fresh twist on the beloved 2005 film, which was later transformed into a hit musical by Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein.

He told Digital Spy: "We are working on a Kinky Boots TV series. I’m writing it at the moment.

"As far as whether I’d star in it, we’ll see how it goes. I’m pitching it to different channels at the moment.”

With a script being written, it's said producers are currently in talks with a number of potential broadcasters.

Meanwhile, writer and actor Ryan is involved in the project from a place of passion.

He added: "I love the movie. It’s great. It’s really good. It has really stuck with me since I saw it.

"With a TV series, you could go into more depth with the story.”

Chiwetel Ejiofor starred in the original cult classic movie, while the musical - which launched in Chicago in 2012 - became hugely popular on Broadway and the West End.

It's based on the true story of Steve Pateman, who followed in his father's footsteps as the boss of a traditional shoe factory in Northamptonshire.

The company was struggling with competition and changing fashion trends, but a phone call from business owner Sue Sheppard led to the factory expanding into larger sizes of women's shoes to fit trans people.

The movie was directed by Julian Jarrold and written by duo Geoff Deane and Tim Firth, who drew inspiration from the BBC's 1999 documentary Trouble At The Top: The Kinky Boot Factory.

Currently, Matt Cardle and Johannes Radebe are starring in a new production of Kinky Boots at the West End's biggest theatre, the London Coliseum.

Johannes stars as drag queen Lola in the production, and he was recently brought to tears when X Factor winner Matt told the crowd about his role as Strictly Come Dancing presenter.

In a TikTok video, he said: "Today, we officially announce that Johannes will be stepping into an incredibly exciting new role, as the presenter of the next series of Strictly Come Dancing!"

As the audience cheered, the When We Collide hitmaker then gave some touching words about Johannes, which left him overcome with emotion.

Matt said: "Being yourself is your greatest strength. We know the audience across the country will fall in love with you even more, just as all of us who know you have already done that."

Johannes wept as his Kinky Boots co-star Annell Odartey presented him with a bouquet of flowers.

As the applause continued, Matt added: "We are so proud of you!"
