ITV scraps Coldwater after one series despite star-studded cast
Coldwater, the six-part thriller, has been canned by ITV after one series.
ITV has cancelled Coldwater after just one series.
The six-part thriller starred Andrew Lincoln and Trainspotting’s Ewen Bremner - but ITV has called time on the show after viewing figures fell from a peak of 3.9 million viewers in September to one million.
An ITV spokesman told The Sun newspaper: "We’re hugely proud of Coldwater and everyone involved in making it.
"While there are no plans for a further series, we loved bringing this story to screen."
David Ireland, the writer, creator and executive producer of Coldwater, would've loved for the show to continue.
He said: "I do find the characters really fascinating and it would be great to keep them going for a few more seasons."
ITV commissioned Coldwater in 2024, when David opened up about his inspirations behind the show.
The writer explained at the time: "Coldwater started with a question I was asking myself. Where do I want to live – the countryside or the city? Such an innocent beginning, but from it came this dark, funny, twisted thriller.
"I was delighted when [the production company] Sister loved the script and thrilled when ITV decided to commission it. And I’m amazed we’ve managed to attract such a peerless cast, led by the formidable Andrew Lincoln. I hope viewers will find it intoxicating."
Elsewhere, Chris Fry, the managing director and executive producer at Sister, was similarly enthusiastic about the project.
He said: "The rural idyll of Coldwater is at first glance a place where nothing bad could ever happen, but you know with David’s bold, subversive writing darkness is always lurking just beneath the surface.
"David is a master of crafting morally complex characters that you feel utterly compelled to watch, and we can’t put these scripts down.
"Led by the incredible Andrew Lincoln, Ewen Bremner, Indira Varma and Eve Myles, Coldwater is a thriller that will surprise, horrify and delight in equal measure.
