Jesse Armstrong has been hailed as a driver of “cultural conversation”.

Praise was heaped on the Peep Show and Succession creator, 55, as he was confirmed as a keynote speaker at this year’s Banff World Media Festival – a move that will add one of television’s most influential voices to a programme for the event designed to reflect the shifting global media landscape.

Jesse, who also executive produced HBO’s hit media dynasty melodrama Succession, will appear at the annual event in Banff, Alberta, where he is set to take part in a keynote conversation moderated by Tom Power of CBC’s Q.

Banff executive director Jenn Kuzmyk said: “Jesse Armstrong doesn’t just capture the cultural conversation, he drives it. “Having him join us at Banff alongside an incredible lineup of creators, executives, and industry disruptors says everything about where the global media business is right now: bold, unpredictable, and evolving fast.”

Jesse’s inclusion comes as the festival expands its lineup of high-profile speakers across television, streaming and digital media, with the 47th edition scheduled to run from June 14 to June 17 at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Canada.

The announcement arrives amid continued cultural attention around Succession, which remains one of the defining prestige dramas of recent years, alongside renewed discussion of Jesse’s earlier work on Peep Show.

Jesse’s career spans both comedy and drama, with other credits including Fresh Meat and Four Lions.

He has picked up multiple Primetime Emmy awards for his writing on Succession.

His recent project, the HBO film Mountainhead, marked his feature directorial debut and has been nominated at this year’s Rockie Awards, which will take place during the festival.

The Banff World Media event has also confirmed a series of additional speakers and sessions.

Jinny Howe, who leads scripted series for the US and Canada at Netflix, will deliver a keynote address, while Henry Winkler is set to appear in a featured ‘In Conversation’ event discussing his work on the History channel series Hazardous History and his involvement with A and E Factual Studios.

Further sessions include a discussion with Georgie Holt, focusing on the company behind Steven Bartlett and his widely followed Diary of a CEO podcast.

A new “Fandom Wednesday” strand will feature speakers including David Madden, Melissa Ahlstrand, Justin Stockman and Dawn Yang, reflecting the growing influence of fan communities and social platforms in shaping entertainment.

The festival will also include appearances from Marc Miller and Vicky Eatrides, with Spain named as the 2026 Country of Honour.
