John Simm has confirmed Grace will return for a seventh season.
After the ITV drama’s sixth run ended on a dramatic cliffhanger that saw Cleo kidnapped on her wedding day, the crime series, which airs on ITV and streams on ITVX, will return with four new episodes.
John, 55, will reprise his role as Roy Grace, alongside Richie Campbell as Glenn Branson, Zoë Tapper as Cleo Morey, Laura Elphinstone as Bella Moy and Brad Morrison as Nick Nicholl.
The announcement follows the season six finale, which left viewers in suspense after Cleo was abducted during her wedding to Roy, prompting questions about the show’s future and direction.
The upcoming seventh season is described as being “based on characters from the best-selling Roy Grace novels”, rather than directly adapting the books by Peter James.
Over time, the series has diverged from the author’s original plots, though with his approval.
Two of the four episodes have been titled When You Are Dead and Picture You Dead, with the latter sharing its name with one of James’s novels, while the remaining titles are yet to be announced.
Speaking about the renewal, John Simm said: “Honestly, if someone had said we’d be doing this for seven seasons when we first started this in lockdown I would never have believed it.
“But the reason I and many others have remained part of this series for so long is down to the team and the writing. It continues to excite and be such a joy for all and we can’t wait to see what's coming next… .”
Executive producer Phil Hunter also addressed the announcement, pointing to the momentum built by the latest series. Hesaid: “Straight off the back of the success of series 6 on ITV and ITVX, I’m thrilled that we are back for a seventh series.
“Following Cleo’s kidnap, we pick up Grace and his team under more pressure than ever for what promises to be another propulsive and explosive run of episodes. I can’t wait to see our brilliant cast and crew rise to the challenge of shooting another four stories based on Peter James’ iconic characters.”
All six previous seasons of Grace are available to watch on ITVX.
