With one departure and one promotion among its stars, the US series, led by Noah Wyle, 54, and created by R Scott Gemmill alongside producer John Wells is preparing for its next instalment following critical success and awards recognition.

According to reporting by Variety, Supriya Ganesh, who plays senior resident Dr Samira Mohan on the show, will exit the show after its second season.

The decision has been described as “a story-driven decision”, reflecting the programme’s setting in a teaching hospital where medical residents regularly rotate roles.

At the same time, Ayesha Harris, who portrays Dr Parker Ellis, a senior night shift resident, has been promoted to a series regular for season three.

Supriya’s departure comes after her character featured prominently across the first two seasons.

In contrast, Ayesha appeared in four episodes during the debut season before returning in the second. Ayesha is also known for roles in Daisy Jones and The Six and Glamorous.

The series reunites Noah with longtime collaborators R Scott Gemmill and John Wells, all of whom previously worked on ER.

Their wider credits include NCIS: Los Angeles, The West Wing and Shameless.

The Pitt follows a 15-episode format, with each season depicting a single shift inside the emergency department of a fictional trauma medical centre.

The show premiered in the United States to critical acclaim, securing multiple awards, before expanding to international audiences.

It recently launched in the UK as part of HBO Max’s rollout, with episodes from the second season released weekly.

Ayesha’s promotion reflects her expanded role within the series, as the show continues to focus on the professional pressures and evolving dynamics of its medical staff during high-intensity hospital shifts.

Noah was central to the success of famed medical drama ER, on which he portrayed Dr John Carter across the majority of the series.

ER became one of television’s most successful and influential dramas, running for 15 seasons and earning widespread critical acclaim and numerous awards.

Noah’s performance charted the character’s progression from medical student to senior doctor and was hailed for providing a consistent emotional core to show, which also starred George Clooney.
