HBO is taking a “script-by-script” approach to any future spin-offs of its hit Game of Thrones franchise.

As speculation continues around the expansion of the series and its worlds, HBO and Max Content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys addressed the future of the Westeros universe amid ongoing interest following the success of House of the Dragon and the forthcoming second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The network has continued to explore potential projects linked to the original Game of Thrones series, including reported developments centred on characters such as Jon Snow, portrayed by Kit Harington and Arya Stark, played by Maisie Williams.

HBO Max is also expanding its presence internationally, with the platform launching in the UK and Ireland on 26 March.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Casey said about the Game of Thrones spin-offs: “You know, we kind of take an individual approach.”

He added: “I don’t like to make any decisions ahead of time, like, ‘We need so many spin-offs’ because I think when you do that, you put yourself in a position where you may compromise.”

Casey continued: “So I like to do it on a script-by-script basis.”

He went on to address the level of speculation surrounding the franchise’s future.

The executive added: “I think one of the challenges with a show or a franchise that’s as popular as Game of Thrones is kind of anything we develop will get speculated about, talked about, and some people will think it’s an actual show.”

He added: “And I always do like to remind people we’ve had exactly two spin-offs… and a lot of speculation elsewhere.”

Discussing the development process, Casey said: “In order to get the best shows, you really do have to develop a lot of things… not just for Game of Thrones, but for television in general.”

He continued: “You try a lot of things. Some things you think are going to be good may actually be good. Some don't turn out well.”

Casey added: “So you really just have to give yourself that ability to try a lot of different things without committing to a show. That process of development works for us.”
