Coronation Street star Andy Whyment has hit back at trolls who shamed him for buying a "cheap" car.

The 44-year-old actor - best known for playing Kirk Sutherland on the ITV soap - shared a "new car day" video to TikTok on Wednesday (18.03.26), in which he was in a Kia dealership, signed papers to officiate his purchase, and drove off the forecourt in a silver Kia Sportage.

It would have cost the actor - who reportedly earns a six-figure yearly salary on Coronation Street - between £30,000 and £45,000 to buy the motor brand new.

One troll penned in the video's comments section: "All that money and you buy a Kia"

A second typed: "Surely you earn enough to do better than a Kia ... get a nice motor not just something to get you from where you are to where you want to be (sic).

And a third wrote: "Shouldn't you be minted?"

Andy responded to one troll who said they "wouldn't have a Kia even if it was free" with: "I've had Kia's for years and never had any problems.

"It's a lovely car and a great drive."

The I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! 2019 campmate's fans also jumped to his defence, as one person commented: “A 32k car isn’t exactly cheap lol. To most people it’s a lot of money.”

A second supporter said: "Ignore any negativity on here, honestly.

"Anyone taking the time to criticise is either bored or dealing with their own issues.

"Massive congratulations on the new car, whatever you choose. As long as it's right for you, that's all that matters.

"Never let anyone else's opinion influence how or why you bought it. At the end of the day, being able to own and maintain a car is an achievement in itself."

And a third follower left: "Great choice, we got 1 a month ago we love (sic)."

In August 2024, Andy told a troll that he "don't earn as much as you probably think I do" after being criticised for not splashing out on a luxurious set of wheels, but instead spending £40,000 on a turbocharged Sportage GT line Kia.
