BBC Radio 2's Sara and DJ Chris worked The UK Cruise Awards, held at 8 Northumberland Avenue, London, on February 26, and after he returned to his hotel room given to him by the event organiser, Chris noticed some bags and bananas that were not his in there, but thought nothing of it.
However, moments after he stripped naked, settled into bed and shut his eyes hours before he needed to DJ at the bash, Chris, 39, was woken up by "two women" who suddenly walked into the room, and the star shouted that he was in bed to the pair before learning one of them was the event's 51-year-old host, Sara.
Chris recalled to his Capital Radio Breakfast Show co-host Jordan North, 36, on the recent episode of their Capital Breakfast: After The Show, Show! podcast: "I come back from this filming, and I’ve walked back into the room.
"And I did think it was odd because there were a couple of other bags in there. And I was just a bit like, 'That is a bit odd, but maybe the organisers of this event have gone in, and sort of moved a couple of things around.'
"The thing that really sticks in my head was that there was bananas. And all of a sudden, there was just some bananas on the table.
"And I thought that is dead weird because I’ve never stayed in a hotel where room service or cleaners just come in and leave some bananas.
"I just thought it was a bit odd, but didn’t overthink it. Anyway, I’ve then got two hours before I’ve got to DJ The Cruise Awards. So, a bit tired and a long day, I thought I’d have a little nap.
"And I’ve got into bed and taken off all my clothes, turned the lights off, put the TV on, and you know that feeling when you just get into a hotel room. And you’re like, 'Ah, brilliant!'"
Chris continued: "Anyway, I’m lying in bed just about to drift off. I’ve got the TV on because I can never sleep without the TV on in hotels ... All of a sudden, the door opens, and two women walk in.
"And my bed is on the other side of the room, and it is quite a long room, and there’s this screen by the bed that is blocking me. And I’m shouting, 'Excuse me, I’m in bed, I’m in bed!' And I just thought it was someone coming to clean the room.
"And you know how usually it’s just a 'sorry' and then they leave. These two women carried on coming in, and I’m going, 'Excuse me, I’m in bed!' And then I just heard this voice I recognised go, 'Chris, is that you?'
"Sara Cox is stood right next to my bed. I obviously haven’t seen her for a few years. I want to give her a hug and stuff like that, but I know I’m completely naked in the bed.
"So, I’m just lying in bed with my arms by my side like a pencil looking up, going, 'Oh, Sara, yeah, yeah, sorry, thought I’d have a sleep.'
Chris thinks the event's organiser "had booked a couple of rooms for me and Sara, who was hosting the awards, separately and has just got the keys muddled up".
The pair had an "awkward conversation" before Sara left the room.
Chris revealed: "So, I’m there, awkward as anything, naked in bed, just trying to chat to Sara Cox. I had the most awkward conversation.
"I love seeing her and you know her, she’s just the nicest person, I love her so much. She left that room, and in the seconds that followed, I just sat there going [makes a cringing noise]. It was the most awkward experience, and what can you do?
"It’s not like I can get out of bed."
And Chris was horrified to find out his smalls were on his bed throughout the embarrassing moment with Sara.
He added: "And do you know the worst thing of all, my pants were just on the bed. So, I know she’s seen my pants.
"I’m so, so ashamed."
