Tommy Lee Jones has joined the cast of acclaimed television drama The Lowdown for its second season.

The veteran actor, 79, will appear alongside Ethan Hawke in the western-noir series created by Sterlin Harjo, and which is produced by FX Productions and streams on Hulu.

The drama centres on a citizen journalist named Lee Raybon – described as a self-proclaimed “truthstorian” – whose investigation into the influential Washberg family draws him into a wider conspiracy after the suspicious suicide of Dale Washberg.

Ethan, 55, returns to the series, while Betty Gilpin joins the production as a newcomer to the cast.

Production on the second season is scheduled to begin this spring.

Its creator Sterlin is known for the television show Reservation Dogs.

The programme is executive produced by Sterlin, as well as Garrett Basch, Ethan, Ryan Hawke, Duffy Boudreau and Scott Teems.

The first season of The Lowdown featured Keith David in the cast and included guest appearances from Kyle MacLachlan, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Michael ‘Killer Mike’ Render, Kaniehtiio Horn, Tracy Letts, Peter Dinklage and Graham Greene.

Tommy’s addition to the series comes as the actor continues a career spanning decades in film and television.

He won an Academy Award for his performance as US marshal Sam Gerard in the 1993 film The Fugitive.

Tommy also received Academy Award nominations for his performances in JFK, directed by Oliver Stone, as well as for roles in Lincoln and In the Valley of Elah.

His film career began with Love Story, and he later appeared in productions including No Country for Old Men, directed by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen.

Tommy has also appeared in films including Batman Forever, Rules of Engagement, the Men in Black franchise, Ad Astra, Jason Bourne and the courtroom drama The Burial, in which he starred alongside Jamie Foxx.

The casting announcement follows personal news for Tommy after the death of his daughter Victoria Jones.

Victoria, 34, died on 1 January 2026 from the toxic effects of cocaine, according to a ruling by the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Authorities said the death was ruled an accidental overdose.

Victoria was discovered unresponsive at the Fairmont San Francisco hotel after emergency services were called to the scene earlier that morning.
