The 62-year-old singer – born Sinitta Malone – who first appeared on the ITV reality show more than a decade ago, returned to film the special series I'm a Celebrity... South Africa in South Africa alongside former contestants.

She told the Daily Star about how she was shocked by how she handled some of the challenges during filming: “I saw a clip of me in camp and I couldn’t believe it was me doing such horrible things.

“It felt like it wasn’t me. I’m like AI.

“You think, ‘That can’t be much. My mum is going to see it and think that's not real - that’s AI’.”

Despite describing moments of unexpected courage during the programme, Sinitta added the experience of living in camp remained difficult because of her fear of insects and other creatures.

She said: “Doing I'm A Celebrity doesn't cure you of your fear of things.

“I thought it would be like immersion therapy.

“I thought if you got covered in a million cockroaches, then one would feel like nothing. But it doesn't work like that.

“Doing the show again was still really terrifying. It’s still really hard.”

Sinitta also said the challenges in the South African series still pushed her to her limits and included moments she described as surreal.

She added: “It was really horrible. But I did have a magical epiphany moment.

“It was insane. It was like a very strange movie.”

The South Africa run of the reality show reunites previous campmates to compete again in the jungle environment and is set to air next month on ITV.

The returning contestants for the South African edition are all former campmates from earlier series of the show.

Filming took place on location in South Africa rather than the Australian jungle setting used in the main programme in recent years.

Sinitta added she would not consider appearing again in the future.

She said: “I will not be doing it again. It gets harder and harder.”

I'm a Celebrity... South Africa is scheduled to begin in April on ITV1.
