ITV confirms detective series Dalziel and Pascoe is to return after 18 years
Nearly 20 decades after its conclusion, ITV is ressurecting the BBC detective sereis Dalziel and Pascoe.
ITV is resurrecting Dalziel and Pascoe.
The long-running BBC detective series debuted in 1996 and concluded in 2007, and ITV has now confirmed it is bringing Dalziel and Pascoe back for modern audiences.
The network has described the upcoming reboot - which is being produced in collaboration with BritBox and All3 Media’s West Road Pictures - as a “contemporary reimagining” of the original series, and confirmed filming is due to start this spring.
Dalziel and Pascoe - which is based on Reginald Hill’s novels of the same name - follows gruff, old-school detective Andrew Dalziel (Warren Clarke) and the newly-qualified DS Peter Pascoe (Colin Buchanan) as they team up to solve complex and gritty cases across the fictional Yorkshire town of Wetherton.
In a statement, ITV comedy head Nana Hughes said: “It’s a genuine privilege to bring Reginald Hill’s much-loved Dalziel and Pascoe back to the screen for a new audience.
“At the heart of this series is the enduring, unexpected chemistry between two very different detectives, and we’re excited to explore that new dynamic.”
BritBox boss Jon Farrar added: “Dalziel and Pascoe has always been about friction, intellect, and the uneasy bond of opposites, forged in pursuit of truth.
“Their chemistry, wit, and moral clarity perfectly complement this richly layered mystery. It’s timeless crime storytelling that not only honours but sharpens its legacy.
“Anchored by two bold, complex leads, West Road Pictures’ contemporary drama is packed with intrigue, wit and gripping mystery narratives.
“A distinct and exciting addition to our renowned detective slate, we’re delighted to partner with ITV and BritBox to bring Dalziel and Pascoe to a global audience.”
The new series of Dalziel and Pascoe is being co-created by Colette Kane - who has worked on shows like Vera - and Vikings: Valhalla’s Daisy Martey, while The Effects of Lying and Missing You’s Isher Sahota is to serve as director.
Other writers for the programme include Chris Ryden, Jon Rowe and Danusia Samal.
Jonathan Fisher, the Managing Director of West Road Pictures, said: “It is a real honour to be reimagining Reginald Hill’s iconic detective series for a contemporary audience.
“We hope that viewers will fall in love with this unlikely yet brilliant pairing all over again.”
While the reboot of Dalziel and Pascoe has now been confirmed, it has not yet been announced who will be stepping into the shoes of the titular detective duo.
In 2014, Clarke passed away following a short illness at the age of 67.
Meanwhile, Buchanan stepped away from TV after Dalziel and Pascoe concluded, though has since made rare appearances on the box in guest roles in programmes like Casualty.
