Sir David Jason was "very, very poignant" while watching previously unseen Only Fools and Horses episodes.

David portrayed Derek 'Del Boy' Trotter in the iconic BBC sitcom, opposite Tessa Peake-Jones, who appeared as his on-screen partner Raquel Turner, and the pair recently reunited to film new docuseries Only Fools and Horses: The Lost Archive.

The two-part programme will feature some of the show's stars watching never-before-seen footage from over 10 classic episodes, and Grantchester star Tessa has revealed David made an emotional confession about the cast being "so young and so successful" when watching himself and others back.

Speaking on Lorraine, Tessa said: "They found unseen footage in a drawer at the BBC and they put it together. I think it's two or three episodes.

"It's literally unseen footage. Some of it was cut scenes, some of it was where things went wrong and they've had to redo it in the studio. Outtakes.

"They've put it all together and they've got the people still remaining on the show to watch the various scenes.

"It's very odd though, because you're looking at something from when you're 30 years younger.

"David Jason was very, very poignant about it.

"There was one bit where he was like, 'Oh, we were so young and so successful then.'

"It's quite depressing."

But Tessa admitted she also found it "quite peculiar" looking back at such old footage of herself in character.

She added: "But I know what he meant. You're seeing yourself decades ago. It's very peculiar."

Tessa has also told how David reminded her that some of the unseen footage was cut from the original episodes because it "wasn't funny".

She added: "Some of it we don't remember, because it was cut.

"David said it was cut because it wasn't funny.

"The scenes that were cut were quite long scenes that were quite sad or moving.

"I think when editing they thought, 'This just isn't funny enough,' but people are going to see it now."
