Russell Kane clashed with his 'extremely right-wing' father
Comedian Russell Kane has recalled how he clashed with his physically imposing father about his "extremely right-wing" political views.
Russell Kane "used to clash" with his father about politics.
The 50-year-old comic has revealed that he would often argue with his dad David about his "extremely right-wing" views, although he "struggled to stand up to him" because of his imposing physical stature.
Russell told Paloma Faith's Mad Sad and Bad podcast: "My dad was extremely right-wing in his views, so we used to clash a bit. Classic BNP manifesto on one hand and then Poppadom on the other.
"My dad was this steroid-injecting, knuckle-dragging, silverback, shaven-headed weightlifting steak. And I was just like a worm, so I struggled to stand up to him verbally."
Meanwhile, Russell explained that he brought in a straight-talking manager as he feared that he had damaged his career by "looking like a t***".
The funnyman recalled: "I was with management that were brilliant and earned me lots of money, but it was more about how much is he being paid and how many people will watch it. It's not about is it right for you and your progression.
So I changed to a manager. I said, please just tell me when I'm being a c***, and he still does to this day, don't wear that. Don't do that. You said that and makes you look like a ****.
"I've lived on the record a year of my career looking like a t*** and lying, and it's damaged some of the infrastructure on which the building of my whole career sits."
Kane explained that fame "went to (his) head" when he first tasted success and made him lose his authenticity.
The Freak Like Me presenter said: "I've got DMs from goddesses. I've got brands wanting to give me money. I've got TV shows. And it just went to my head.
"So the hair went right up here, the eyeliner went on. I was wearing all these outrageous clothes. IT clothes. I was single. I was sleeping around."
Russell added: "Okay, so with comedy, if I'm on stage going my dad this, my nan that, and look how real I am. But I'm presenting as someone artificial with fake hair, fake eyeliner, lying about my age with no sexual morals, people (are) like, 'Oh so you're not authentic then.'
"And if people think you're not an authentic person, they then think your stand-up's not authentic, then you're f*****."
