Russell Kane was "mugged" by baboons during a trip to Botswana.

The 49-year-old comedian was confronted by the primates in his tent, and while one stole a jar of Russell's jam, the star found it "really exciting" to watch the baboon use his two wrists to twist the jar open before polishing off the preserve.

Recalling the time he did a wetlands safari in Africa, which included heading across the border into Zambia, where he camped in a tree, he told 'Dancing on Ice' judge Oti Mabuse on TUI's 'Pack Your Bags with Russell Kane' podcast: "We were having breakfast, and I got mugged by some baboons.

"The male held guard and all the mum and the kids went up into my tent. We were travelling with jars of jam and bread, basic rations, it got my jar of jam, and the guy who ran the camp went, 'Don't worry, they can't open jars.'

"And then with his two wrists, this monkey opened that jar and ate it [the jam] whilst looking at me.

"It was really exciting to be mugged."

Russell had to camp in a tree because there were so many animals around him, and he recalls seeing lots of "yellow eyes glinting" at night.

'The Stand Up Sketch Show' star said: "We went across the border into Zambia, and I camped in a tree, and there's so many animals, that you can't camp on the floor.

"They have a platform in the tree, and the wardens with a torch if you need a wee in the night - I probably couldn't go now because I'd do about 100 wees a night - and they take you to the loo.

"And all you can see is yellow eyes glinting."

Asked if she had been on a safari, 43-year-old dancer Oti said: "We did one in the Kruger [National Park, South Africa], and then we did another one in Sun City, which is the most beautiful place in the world.

"The only thing that's dangerous are the monkeys."
