Call The Midwife star Rebecca Gethings promised Sister Veronica will be "forever changed" by the new series.

The beloved BBC period drama returned on Sunday (11.01.25) for its 15th season, and the actress promised viewers would see her character go on an emotional "journey".

She's quoted by RadioTimes.com as saying: "You're going to see a journey for Sister Veronica.

"I don't know where she'll end up, but she will have been to some places and seen some things she's possibly never experienced before.

"She'll be forever changed by this series - so watch this space!"

In the first episode of the new series over the weekend, Sister Veronica - also known as Beryl - revealed she feels ready to have "a child of [her] own".

She told Geoffrey: "I want a child. I want a child of my own, to hold in my arms and keep safe and cherish always. I want a child before it becomes impossible."

Her character will have to come to terms with the idea of leaving her vocation and becoming a mother.

Actress Rebecca added: "She's a surprising woman.

"As much as I thought I knew her at the beginning of this season, she's really surprised me – and surprised herself. She’s stepping into her womanhood, in a way.

"I think there’s a part of being a nun in her that's subjugated all of that, but she’s now acknowledging that side of herself."

The show was previously rumoured to be ending after its 15th series, but the speculation was shot down by BBC bosses who insisted it will be back for series 16.

The statement explained: "The BBC would like to reassure fans that Call The Midwife will remain at the heart of the BBC for years to come.

"As previously announced, there are two Christmas specials, a new series, a film and prequel series, before a sixteenth series in due course.

"Call the Midwife isn't going anywhere."
