Coronation Street fans are heartbroken as they watched Billy Mayhew die in emotional scenes during the tragic Corriedale episode.

Debbie Webster's (Sue Devaney's) wedding to Ronnie (Vinta Morgan) took a tragic turn as Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) zoomed off with Debbie in the car, at the same time Becky (Amy Cudden) lost control of her motor while carrying Lisa (Vicky Myers) and Betsy (Sydney Martin), which caused multiple vehicles to crash into each other on the road between Hotten and Weatherfield.

Meanwhile, vicar Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) headed straight for the accident while he drove the minibus, carrying wedding guests, including David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd), Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford).

The minibus crashed into a car driven by Emmerdale characters John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) and Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), overturned and was ablaze.

Amid the vehicle being alight, most of the passengers managed to escape, but Billy was trapped by his seatbelt. However, he still tried to get out.

However, when the evil Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) was on the scene to see who was still trapped inside the minibus, he clipped Billy back into his seat before leaving him to burn alive.

But as fuel leaked towards the fire, Billy could not make it out as the minibus exploded.

And viewers broke down in tears as they were forced to say goodbye to the vicar after 11 years on Coronation Street.

Taking to social media, one person said: "That was horrifying, I’m in tears. Poor Billy."

A second fan typed: "BILLY SAYING HIS F****** OWN LAST RITES HAS DONE ME IN, I’m in tears (sic)."

And a third supporter penned: "Goodbye Billy Mayhew what an exit brought a tear to my eye that did but he’s with the love of his life Paul.

"Congratulations Daniel Brocklebank on 11 fantastic years I wish you all the best of the future. (sic)"

In early 2025, Daniel confirmed he would be leaving Coronation Street.

Daniel said: "I have been working on Corrie for a quarter of my life.

"I have adored every minute I have been in that building and have never not looked forward to going into work.

"I love everyone who works on this show, and whilst I am sad to be going, I am equally excited to see what the future holds.”

And Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks said: "Billy will be involved in a major storyline over the coming months, which will see him tested in ways he never imagined, as friendships and his faith are pushed to the limit.

"We’re incredibly sad to bid farewell to Dan, who has been fantastic in some of Corrie’s biggest storylines over the past few years, most notably Paul’s MND.

"An actor of immeasurable talent and skill, and an absolute treasure behind the scenes – he will be missed by all of us on the cobbles."
