Gavin and Stacey star Robert Wilfort has jokingly called for a "grassroots campaign" to get him cast as the next Doctor Who Time Lord.

Following Disney+'s exit from its partnership with the BBC on the next season of Doctor Who, the 48-year-old actor said the long-running sci-fi drama's bosses should ditch "sexy young" Doctors for "middle-aged" Time Lords.

Immediately responding to the corporation's announcement on Tuesday (28.10.25) that a Christmas 2026 special is happening, with plans for the next series being confirmed in due course, Robert said on Instagram: "Right, come on everyone, I want a grassroots campaign to get me cast as the next Doctor.

"No more sexy young ones. Back to weird middle aged Doctors please. (sic)"

Many of Robert's followers backed the idea of him becoming the Sixteenth Doctor in the post's comments section.

His Gavin and Stacey co-star Laura Aikman (Sonia) wrote: "Behind you all the way."

A fan of Robert - who played Jason West in Gavin and Stacey - called on Doctor Who's showrunner, 62 year old Russell T Davies: "Im down for this, we need a Welsh doctor!! Make it happen @russelltdavies63 (sic)."

And another of the actor's supporters penned: "I'd love to see you as the next doctor be cool (sic)."

However, one person said they would also be thrilled to see Gavin and Stacey writer and star Ruth Jones, 59, become the Doctor one day - especially because she played Nikki Bevan in the BBC sci-fi series Torchwood.

They said: "I'd absolutely love to see you in the role, I think you'd be brilliant!

"I know she was in Torchwood, but I'd love to see @ruthjonesgenuine as the Doctor as well, I think she'd be brilliant.

"So much talent in Cymru, and we are so overdue a Cymraeg actor to play the Doctor."

At the end of the most recent episode of Doctor Who, titled The Reality War - aired earlier this year - Billie Piper (Rose Tyler) made a shock return as the Fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, 33, regenerated into Tenth Time Lord David Tennant's companion.

Whovians - the nickname given to fans of Doctor Who - were left wondering if Billie will be the Sixteenth Doctor in the new series.

And the 43-year-old star said at the time that she could not resist the opportunity to return to the TARDIS.

Billie added: "It's no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that TARDIS one more time was just something I couldn't refuse!"
