Catherine Tyldesley has revealed it "felt right" to head back to Coronation Street after seven years away.

The actress' character Eva Price left Weatherfield to start a new life in France, but she is now returning as landlady of The Rovers Return - and Catherine admits she previously thought her comeback would be limited to a "funeral" sequence and was delighted to find out soap bosses wanted her back full time.

She told The Sun newspaper: "I assumed [i would be returning for] someone’s funeral. I thought somebody’s dying - they want me to rock up."

Catherine, 42, went on to admit it was a dream come true to be offered the chance for her character to run The Rovers.

She added: "I was just really shocked. It’s an absolute dream. I remember watching the show as a kid, thinking: ‘God, I’d kill to be landlady one day. How cool would that be?’"

The actress went on to insist the job came at the right time because she'd been away filming for almost a year and wanted to spend more time at home in Manchester with her husband Tom Pitfield and their three-year-old daughter Iris.

Catherine said: "I’d been away for nine months. I feel really blessed to have carried on working and done some great things, but I remember my husband Tom saying to me: 'God, I hope your next job’s in Manchester, Cath' - and then we got this call [about the Coronation Street role].

"I’ve been asked before to come back but it didn’t work in the past because I had other projects. This time, I was like: 'This could work’.

"So it all came around at the right time. On a personal and professional level it felt right, and I’m so thrilled to be back. It’s just been gorgeous."

Catherine is believed to have returned to filming Corrie over the summer and is expected to be back on screens during the autumn.

A source previously told The Sun: "Cath has been away for a while and worked on countless other projects but she really missed Corrie'.

"“They’ve tried to get her back a few times but the stars have never aligned.

"But when she was approached with the idea for Eva’s return, it was too good of an opportunity to pass up ...

"She’s so excited and can’t wait to get back on the cobbles and it’s definitely not going to be a storyline to miss."
