Meryl Streep often considers retirement.

The 73-year-old actress - who has been married to Don Gummer since 1978 and has four grow-up children, Henry, 43, Mamie, 39, Grace, 36, and 31-year-old Louisa with him - has been nominated for a record 21 Oscars and won three over her six-decade spanning career.

Even though she is still one of the most in-demand stars in Hollywood, Meryl often thinks about giving it all up in order to spend her final years relaxing in an idyllic location with her husband.

Speaking to the US edition of Closer magazine, she said: "I would tell my husband, 'OK. That's it. I'm not going to work anymore. Let's find a place to retire!'

"I have had a wonderful time raising four children, and I've also been lucky to have the support of a wonderful husband."

Meryl - who won her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1979's 'Kramer vs. Kramer' - has also enjoyed the third act of her career as she has been offered so many interesting roles as opposed to just being the "beautiful leading lady".

She said: "The good thing about getting older is that when they do cast you, it's often something interesting you're no longer asked to be the beautiful leading lady!"

Some of Meryl's more recent roles have included playing late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady', hotel owner Donna Sheridan in ABBA musical 'Mamma Mia!' and President Janie Orlean in political satire 'Don't Look Up'.

A friend of the 'Only Murders in the Building' star went on to describe Meryl - whose real name is Mary Louise - as being "most proud" of the achievements in her personal life and claimed that as well as being husband and wife, Meryl and Don are the "best of friends" who miss each other when she is away working.

The friend said: "She's proudest of her children, her marriage and her career, in that order. They love reading, going out to dinner, watching films, going to museums and art galleries. They truly are best friends and on the same page about most things. They both agree that being apart is healthy. They miss each other when they're apart because they genuinely like each other."
