'We were aiming to be like them...' BLACKPINK share their own Spice Girls nicknames on Carpool Karaoke
BLACKPINK wanted to be like the Spice Girls, noting that the 'Viva Forever' hitmakers were a major influence on them as a girl group.
BLACKPINK have always wanted to be like the Spice Girls.
The record-breaking K-Pop girl group consists of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa have released two chart-topping studio albums in recent years and have now admitted that the '90s girl group have been a major influence on them and they wanted to emulate the fivesome.
During an appearance on the final Carpool Karaoke segment of 'The Late Late Show', Rosé told James Corden: "Since I was young I used to listen to the radio and then their song 'Wannabe' came out and I was like, 'Oh!', I was vibing with them."
Bandmate Lisa went on to add that she and her fellow 'How You Like That' hitmakers - who have broken all streaming records as a girl group on both Spotify and YouTube since starting out in 2016 - "really liked" how each member of the Spice Girls had their own character and admitted they wanted to replicate that.
She said: "We really liked how they had their own individual characters and that was something that we were aiming for and it was just such such iconic band that we grew up listening to."
After releasing their smash hit debut single 'Wannabe' in July 1996, Top of the Pops magazine assigned each of the girls a nickname based on their personality, with Geri Halliwell becoming Ginger Spice, Victoria Beckham receiving the moniker of Posh Spice , Mel B becoming Scary Spice, Emma Bunton becoming Baby Spice and Melanie C being renamed Sporty Spice. The monikers were popular with the girls and their fans and became a major part of their appeal.
Before closing out the segment - which over the years of James' tenure on 'The Late Late Show' has seen A-list guests such as Britney Spears, Stevie Wonder and Adele being driven round LA belting out classic tracks - James came up with a new nickname for each of the BLACKPINK girls in a similar vein.
Rosé - who was born in New Zealand but raised in Australia - declared that she could be known as Aussie Pink, whilst James christened Lisa as Boss Pink, Jennie became Shy Pink, and Jisoo was renamed Nail Pink.
