Obsession director Curry Barker drops new horror film on YouTube in time for Halloween
Curry Barker stormed the box office with Obsession, but he's returned to his YouTube roots in time for Halloween.
Curry Barker has returned to his YouTube roots with new horror short Mama Bear.
The Obsession filmmaker, whose feature debut stormed the box office and grossed over $520 million from a $750,000 budget, has written, directed and edited a new five-minute project just in time for Halloween.
Barker released the short on his and Cooper Tomlinson's That's A Bad Idea channel.
The film follows Floyd (Jon Lee Richardson), a young man who keeps getting disturbing phone calls during his nap.
His day turns into a nightmare when Floyd realises he isn't the only version of himself, with Joshua Snyder playing the character's doppelganger.
The cast also features Katie Sarife as Lacey, and Ericka Kreuz as Ms Wilson.
Barker reunited with Obsession's production designer Vivian Gray and costume designer Blair James for the short film.
James told The Hollywood reporter that the project was shot "three and a half weeks ago", with a "really quick turnaround" for its release.
She added: "I always love getting to work with Curry, and it’s really such a gift to get to work with him as a stylist and a costume designer.
"He really trusts me a lot, which really makes the experience so special."
Barker is no stranger to YouTube shorts, having released Heavy Eyes, Enigma, Warnings, The Chair and Milk and Serial.
Meanwhile, James explained that she enjoys having variety in her own career.
She said: "I put everything I have into everything I do. So to me, it’s fun when it’s different every time.
"I feel like if I just did features back to back to back, it would start to feel repetitive. Which is what I really love about doing styling and costume designing is getting to do new things all the time.
"I love a short film. I love to give my all for two weeks and then it’s done. It’s a rush. Then I love also the process of a long feature or just a quick styling job.”
Barker is set to drop his next feature film Anything But Ghosts in May 2027, which will see him star alongside friend and collaborator Tomlinson, with the pair also co-writing the film.
Tomlinson had promised his friend will "show a different side of him" in the film, while they wanted to "stay grounded" for the project, which will also star the likes of Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard and Violet McGraw.
He told the Raiders of the Lost Podcast: "I think what's great about this upcoming movie is, he does some different stuff.
"He's gonna show a different side of him."
Anything But Ghosts, which wrapped production shortly before Obsession took the box office by storm, follows two con artists pretending to be ghost hunters.
However, things take a haunting twist when they find themselves facing an actual dark entity.
Meanwhile, Barker is also attached to write and direct a reimagined Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, after becoming one of the horror world's most in-demand filmmakers.
