Tom Hiddleston has described Avengers: Doomsday as "monumental".

The 44-year-old actor is reprising his role as Loki in the upcoming Marvel blockbuster and, after finishing his scenes for the highly anticipated blockbuster, he insisted fans will be treated to something special.

He teased: "My contribution has been contributed.

"It is monumental. The centre of the story is absolutely brilliant, and was so surprising when I read it. It just has never been done before.”

Hiddleston last played the supervillain in season two of his own spinoff TV show, and he relished getting to bring sympathy and depth to the character, which culminated in the finale of the series as his alter ego was given a second chance at doing the right thing.

He said: “In order to become someone different, whose story had a different ending, he had to make peace with the things he did.

“It gave him the power of authorship over his own story.”

The chance to give that arc to Loki was significant for the Hollywood star, who has been inspired by stories of redemption ever since watching The Shawshank Redemption as a young boy.

He explained: "I still find it incredibly emotional. It's so moving, the idea that you get another chance.

"I suppose I want that for everyone."

As for Avengers: Doomsay, Robert Downey Jr. - whose Iron Man character was killed off in Avengers: Endgame - will return to the franchise as main villain Doctor Doom.

The cast will also feature the likes of Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Letitia Wright (Black Panther) and Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).

Other returning stars include Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier), Wyatt Russell (U.S. Agent) Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Danny Ramirez (The Falcon) and Winston Duke (M’Baku).

The cast will even feature stars from 2000's X-Men - the movie which kicked off the modern superhero era - including Sir

Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Sir Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops) and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), as well as Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) from X2: X-Men United and Kelsey Grammer (Beast) from X-Men: The Last Stand.
