Charlize Theron has told fans 'The Old Guard 2' will be released "soon".

The 48-year-old star has reassured supporters the sequel has "finally" been picked up again after delays, including Netflix going through "a lot of changes".

Speaking at her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party, she told Variety: "We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it.

"Netflix went through quite a changeover.

"They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it."

Theron is "really excited" about the upcoming movie, which wrapped filming around two years ago.

She added: "We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it.

"It’s really good. It’s a really important film to us.

"I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie."

In June 2022, Uma Thurman and Henry Golding joined the cast of the superhero sequel, alongside returning cast members Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The sequel will be helmed by Victoria Mahoney, after Gina Prince-Bythewood stepped down from the role.

Theron plays the lead role of warrior Andromache of Scythia, and the plot once again comes from Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez's graphic novel series.

The first movie followed a team of immortal mercenaries on a revenge mission.

In 2020, Theron admitted she and other cast members were keen to make a sequel after the motion picture proved popular with audiences on the streaming service.

She said: "We're still pushing this one out.

"Let's have a little resting period, but just given the fact that all of us really want to do it, I'm sure when it's the right time, we'll start the conversation."
